Juste la fin du monde

Translated into English, the title becomes "It's Only the End of the World."

As a French indie movie, it is not like a typical Hollywood movie so don't expect Louis to say "I'm dying and so little time left for me," to his family members at the beginning of the story. He doesn't even say that cheesy line even until the end of the movie.

"Juste la fin du monde" ends with a dying bird laying down on a carpet's in the foyer area accompanied by the sun that is going down. The main protagonist, Louis, puts his cap and opens the house's main door and just walks away by saying nothing.

He never accomplishes his very reason visiting, perhaps coming back, to his family in his hometown. In such an emotionally roller coaster feeling I felt while watching the movie, Louis in the end cannot tell his family that he will die soon.

Probably he feels so unethical coming home only to tell that he is dying. Normally, meeting family after long time separation is supposedly for a happy event and to share good news not bad news, let alone "I am dying" sudden message.

Louis is still hoping that his family he left years ago has finally changed. Of course bitter truth is painful, Louis realizes that his hope simply evaporated in the thin air. His efforts to leave his family back then is in vain.

Here, how Louis interacts with his family whom he left 12 years ago pursuing his drama writing carrier, is the thing Dolan explores in Louis' short visit to his mother's house.

"As resentment soon rewrites the course of the afternoon, fits and feuds unfold, fueled by loneliness and doubt," said UniFrance. "While all attempts at empathy are sabotaged by people's incapability to listen and love," it then continues describing the movie.

Aside from interpreting the movie itself, I really enjoyed the movie. I had to admit that it was the best movie I've ever watched so far at IFI Thamrin, Jakarta.

I adored how those people play their roles. Their expressions fit well to each assigned situation. It is the usual expressions we have when we interact with our family or remember certain memories, like we look ourselves in the mirror.
